Belmont, North Carolina

Historic Downtown Belmont NC
West of Charlotte NC real estate, the charming historical Town of Belmont North Carolina in Gaston County offers a quality lifestyle and affordable homes for almost 10,000 residents.  Major cultural and educational facilities, community events, and the cared-for environs are luring more and more families from homes in Charlotte NC to this quaint community.

Drawn to the beautiful location between the Catawba and South Fork rivers, not too far from the amenities of Charlotte commercial real estate, families are seeking out a place a bit removed from it all.  Belmont real estate offers new developments, historic homes, and urban luxury townhomes.  Families may choose to settle down in the new-home development at Montcross, a grand master-planned, mixed-use community.

Beginning with the pedestrian-friendly vibrant downtown, redeveloped to accentuate the historical elements, streetlamps, and brick sidewalks, Belmont features a assortment of fine shops, antiques stores, bakeries, gift shops, and restaurants.  Sounds from bands and orchestras fill the summer Friday evenings with melody.

During the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century, the railroad town enjoyed a strategic position in the middle of the textile industry.  The textile magnate R.L. Stowe's mansion, now the Belmont Historical Society Cultural and Heritage Learning Center, is the third oldest home in town.  The Historic District actually includes 264 buildings and 2 structures built between 1850 and 1949 including samples of Tudor Revival, Bungalow/Craftsman, and Colonial Revival architecture.

The Abbey Basilica of Mary Help of Christians is one of the most notable buildings.  Once a cathedral and the largest Catholic Church in the state, it is located at Exit 26 on Interstate 85 on the campus of Belmont Abbey.  Its stained glass windows were a part of a display that won four gold medals at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1892.  It is now a Minor Basilica.  Other educational institutions in the small town include Gaston College on Wilkinson Boulevard and the Holy Angels home for the handicapped operated by the Sisters of Mercy.

The world-class Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden southwest of town features 450-acres of gorgeous landscape, thanks to retired textile executive Daniel J. Stowe.  The new Orchid Conservatory houses a tropical plant collection.  Both bring tourists from around the world.  For the rough and ready, the U.S. National Whitewater Center is located across the Catawba River on the east bank.  The non-profit recreation facility offers whitewater rafting, canoeing, and kayaking.

Belmont NC real estate provides a wealth of recreational and leisure opportunities for all ages, from dance classes to yoga, to youth athletics.  It also sponsors lively events such as the Garibaldi Festival during May at Stowe Park, the Senior Debutante Ball, the Go Fly and Kite Contest, Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt, Older Americans Day, Concert in the Park Series, Summer Celebration, Senior Hometown Hoedown, Belmont Fall Festival, Halloween Bash, and Gerald White Memorial Tennis Festival.

Belmont NC is one of my favorite places in all of the metro Charlotte NC area! Check it out!
