Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina

Fifth and Poplar Condos, Uptown Charlotte, NC
If you are thinking of relocating to Charlotte, NC real estate consider moving to 'Uptown' Charlotte! There are an abundance of activities in Uptown Charlotte; a veritable  plethora of restaurants, bars, museums, art galleries, dance clubs, sports venues, and  oh, let's not forget the fabulous shopping!  You will never be  bored in Uptown Charlotte!  Uptown Charlotte is divided into 4 Wards named First, Second, Third and Fourth.  The wards are set within an area that resembles an upside down bell created by I-77 on the Northwest side; Brookshire Freeway on the Northeast & Southeast and I-277 on the Southwest & Southeast.

Each ward has its own flavor and uniqueness that sets it apart from the others.

The First Ward is located East of the intersections of North Tryon and East Trade. The First Ward is undergoing a tremendous change due, in part, to a HUD HOPE VI grant.  An 'urban' village has been planned, and started, that will be home to retail and office space, a hotel, almost 3,000 residential units and a park of 4 acres.  Other new developments are planned with construction in progress for some.  The First Ward is also home to the Bobcats, Spirit Square, the Main Library and many restaurants and shops.

The Second Ward is located due South of the intersection of South Tryon and East Trade streets and is home to many Government agencies. This ward too, is undergoing revitalization in a big way.  One proposal is  'Trump Charlotte,' ala Donald Trump, a vast project that includes a fabulous five-star hotel, high-end condos & retail shops and an office tower.  Located on what was once the Charlotte Convention Center will be the new EpiCentre.  This new complex will have a condominium tower, retail shops and entertainment venues.  One aspect of the new EpiCentre is already completed and opened... the aLoft Charlotte Hotel.  The Second Ward is home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Lying west of the intersections of West Trade and South Tryon is the Third Ward.  Home of  the Duke Energy Center (former Wachovia First Street Project) which is a 48 story tower and the anchor of the multi-use Wells Fargo Cultural Campus, Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Knights Theater, a high-rise condo tower and the new Mint Museum.  One of North Carolina's largest multi-use complexes is the Gateway Village which is made up of approximately 500 residential units, shops, office space and restaurants.  The Romare Bearden Park will feature his writings and works set in this urban park which is slotted to be started in late Summer of 2010.  In addition to all this there are numerous condo projects that are in construction or proposed.  The flavor of the Third Ward is rich and very eclectic with its 'street car neighborhoods' and turn of the century history it has joined the 21st Century with an injection of high-rises, Bank of America Stadium, elegant shops and future transportation hub.

Situated Northeast of where West Trade and North Tryon meet is the historic Fourth Ward which is largely residential. The Fourth Ward is known for its gorgeous Victorian and Queen Anne style homes.  The Fourth Ward in the 1850s was a thriving residential area that was highly desirable due to its closeness to uptown shops and businesses and it still is!  Although many of these wonderful homes are now gone, the area underwent a tremendous overhaul implemented by leaders in the community in the 1970s.  Today, while the Fourth Ward is home to the North Carolina Music Factory, and entertainment complex and several new condominium towers, it is still mainly a residential area with wonderful, charming, old homes.
