York, South Carolina

Located in north-central South Carolina less than 30 miles from Charlotte NC real estate, the City of York, the county seat of York County, is absorbing rapid growth in the area.  York SC homes offer a traditional lifestyle great for raising families near recreation and not too far from commercial real estate in Charlotte, the primary economic hub in the Carolinas.

Over 7,000 residents now enjoy the quality of life in York SC real estate.  Known as White Rose City, York features a variety of real estate in affordable price ranges, including single family homes, restored plantation homes, empty land lots, and condominiums, on tree-lined streets in friendly York neighborhoods.

Since the late 1700s, York has been an important center.  The town, originally called Fergus Crossroads and then Yorkville, became the county seat in 1785.  Fergus Crossroads was the intersection of stagecoach routes.  Yorkville became a commercial and cultural center in the area.

Therefore, it boasts one of South Carolina's largest (264 acres) and best-restored Historic Districts.  A walk along Liberty, Kings Mountain, Jefferson, Congress, and Madison streets is fascinating for the architecture student.  Renovated buildings include the Rose Hotel, the old First Presbyterian Church, and York County Courthouse.

While working hard to preserve the heritage of the community, residents are also actively involved in establishing a healthy business climate.  To remain on top of the growth curve, the City is busily renovating and restoring neighborhoods, facilities, and roads.

Nearby opportunities at Lake Wylie, with its 325 miles of shoreline, include boating, fishing, and a wide range of water sports.  The scenic surroundings provide ample outdoor activities in the area, including golf, tennis, and bicycling.  The community hosts a favorite regional event, Summerfest, with arts, crafts, concerts, golf, tractor show, and moonlight bike ride.

Summerfest is the largest one-day festival in the state and won accolades as the most outstanding event of its kind.  During
the winter, folks come out for Christmas in Old Yorke, a unique tour of 100- to 150-year-old homes and churches all decked out for the season.  Other events include the York County Farmers market, Barn Burner Classic, Antique Show, Open Art Competition, Apple Harvest Festival, Culture and Heritage Commission Gala, Storytelling Festival, and Vintage Celebration.

There are also year-round attractions in the area.  Brattonsville, only 10 miles away, is a restored working plantation open year round.  It predates the King's Mountain Battleground 20 miles north, which is famous for the 1780 Revolutionary War battle.  Another local attraction is Carowinds, a well-known amusement park located 20 miles northeast.

From its position between Interstates 77 and 85, residents easily move between local business parks, government offices, and metropolitan amenities.
